Microsoft Power BI Pricing Guide
No discussion of business intelligence vendors is complete without mentioning Microsoft’s BI solution, Power BI.  Microsoft Power BI is one of the only cloud-based business intelligence softwares, recognized as a leader in the self-serve BI space, according to PCMag.  With new features and integrations coming out every month, including interactive visualization and analysis services, it’s one of the fastest growing and most powerful business intelligence tools out there.  But before we dive into the Power BI pricing structure, let’s look at your options if you’re looking at choosing Power BI for your business analytics.

Power BI Product Options
Power BI offers two product options, or “services,” as they refer to them: Power BI service and Power BI Pro service.  Both tools allow connections to cloud sources as well as sharable dashboards, but Power BI Pro offers more dynamic capabilities.  Power BI allows 1GB capacity per user, while Power BI Pro allows 10GB.  Additionally, Power BI Pro refreshes data more often, offers faster data streaming and provides more collaboration capabilities, to name a few of the additional features.  There’s also a suite of applications that integrate with either service available for download.

Now for the pricing structure:

Microsoft Power BI Prices

Power BI service: Power BI service is the free tier of the Power BI offerings, and is best used by individuals whose reports and data are relatively small.

Power BI Pro service: Power BI Pro is the better option for powerful business analytics use, and is available for $9.99 per user per month, with an annual subscription required.

Power BI Applications: Microsoft has developed a free suite of apps that provide additional functionality for both services.  These applications provide features including on-premise data integration, an Excel add-in and mobile capabilities.

The prices above are general guidelines, however pricing can vary by number of users and company size.  The best way to get an accurate number is to request a free price quote here.

If You’re Not Sure About Power BI
Despite its status as one of the cheapest business intelligence tools as well as having one of the simplest pricing structures, Power BI isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution.  If you’d like to explore other BI tools, you can check out our Business Intelligence Leaderboard, and read our article comparing Microsoft Power BI to Tableau and Qlikview.

Tableau is a powerful data visualization tool.  It provides fast data analysis and data refreshing functions and, like Qlik Sense, is intuitive to use but doesn’t support scripts.  Tableau is offered in DesktopBig Data Analysis and Server.

Like Tableau, Qlik offers three different products: Qlikview, Qlik Sense and Qlik Sense Cloud.  Each product has different versions with different capabilities, including free versions for each product.  A data visualization tool, Qlik is one of the largest BI vendors that makes data analysis easy for most businesses.

Along with data visualization, Sisense allows users to combine data from multiple sources.  This function helps gather the most accurate insights possible, since all of your data can be analyzed together.  Sisense is tailored for mid- to large-sized businesses.
