**Our Research Process for Slack**

I didn’t want to get accused of “slacking” on this page (and I wanted to get that pun in), so I asked for a little bit of help from our research team. I used that as a starting point for key differentiators and features that I then cross-verified and tested out with our company’s free trial. To get firsthand experience with features not covered with the free trial, I watched demos on YouTube and scoured Slack’s help center to understand how (and if) they worked.

## Slack Benefits and Insights

Why use Slack?

### Key differentiators & advantages of Slack

* **Speed-Up Search and Summarization with AI:** Stop scrolling through weeks and weeks of messages to double-check instructions, information or deadlines with Slack AI’s search feature. Get an AI-generated summary of what you’ve searched for with clearly linked sources. Streamline handovers and catch up quicker after PTO by setting timeframes and summarizing channel messages for those dates. Use the Slack Digest to get a recap of all your channels.
* **Minimize Context Switching with Canvas:** Create whiteboards and documents for channels from Canvas templates or build them from scratch, complete with links, action items, videos and photos, tables, watchers, important information and workflows. Managing edit and view access and adding comments with mentions to selected text keeps canvases transparent.
* **Communicate with External Collaborators:** Leave files sharing via a third party and multiple email threads in the past. Keep lines of communication open via one tool, even if users aren’t a part of your organization, with Slack Connect where you can share an invite to external users and message in Slack. Share channels and documents, book meetings and use automations.
* **Optimize User Profiles and Organization Hierarchies:** Get familiar with your team members with a little help from Slack Atlas to create and manage user profiles with interests, key projects and team goals. Let users' personalities shine with custom fields for long-form content in the “About Me” section and smart tags for language and training certifications.
* **Increase User Accessibility:** Check in on important conversations and updates using the app on iOS and Android phones. Improve accessibility for visually impaired users with a screen reader to navigate channels, read messages and access information from the sidebar from a web browser.

### Industry Expertise

Slack is an all-in-one communication and collaboration platform designed to help companies of all sizes and industries.

### Synopsis of User Ratings and Reviews

Based on an aggregate of Slack reviews taken from the sources above, the following pros & cons have been curated by a SelectHub Market Analyst.

#### Pros

* **User Friendly:** Users appreciated Slack’s easy-to-navigate interface and minimal learning curve.
* **Collaborative Functionality:** Features like highlighted messages, reply threads, real-time delivery via the mobile app and video conferencing are a plus for reviewers.
* **Centralized and Searchable Communication:** Reviewers liked how one-on-ones, group chats, video calls and huddles are all in one place and easily searchable.

#### Cons

* **Limited Free Features:** Users noted that the free version only allows one-on-one huddles and doesn’t save messages and files beyond a certain time frame.
* **Notifications:** The number of notifications and messages can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially in larger teams, according to reviewers.

#### Researcher's Summary:

Slack is a collaboration and communication all-rounder with something for everyone regardless of size or industry. It helps users boost productivity and avoid context switching with centralization, organization, automation and AI.

Full disclosure, I used Slack before I embarked on this test. However, even when I first began sending slacks, I thought it was incredibly simple to navigate, create channels and send messages on both the browser and via the mobile app.

The organization of the platform is a massive plus, in my opinion. The sidebar allows you to get into DMs, saved messages, an activity feed and access a few additional features, all while you can see an overview of your channels and DMs. I liked that you can also create new channels, huddles, messages and canvases there too. Slack AI’s summarization and search capabilities have the potential to be a game-changer on the time saving front.

This test also put me on the idea that Slack can be used very effectively as a proofing and template creation tool. It was very easy to create a new canvas using the templates or from scratch and modify it with links, checklists, additional resources, clips and documents. I loved the ability to add mentions and links in the comments so everyone is on the same page with the same context.

It looks like both reviewers and I were pumped that Slack added a video conferencing tool in huddles that allows you to share your screen, save messages and documents and avoid switching to a new app if you want to get on a quick call. On the flip side, users were underwhelmed by the limitations of the free version, although it wasn’t enough to put them off Slack completely.

To sum it up, I’d say Slack is a winner if you’re looking for a platform that will organize and centralize your communication and have the budget for their paid plans.

## Key Features

* **Huddles:** Bump real-time communication to the forefront with Huddles. Start a video or voice call in any channel or direct message by clicking on the headphone icon in the top right of your screen. Share your screen, write notes through threads and add links and documents that are saved once the huddle ends.
* **Direct Messaging:** Chat with colleagues and team members one-on-one or via group chats. Click on the plus icon at the bottom left of your screen to start a new conversation that is private to the members added and is also saved and searchable. Use Slack Connect to send DM links to external collaborators.
* **Channels:** Create a channel for any topic you need to segment teams and projects and communicate with the team at large. Set privacy parameters for whether a channel is public, private or accessible to multiple workspaces. Share files, documents and links, use emojis, tag or mention users and start huddles.
* **Automations:** Shell out for the paid plan, and you can build custom no-code automations in Slack with the workflow builder. Set up steps and triggers to create native functions like creating a channel or sending a message, connector functions like adding an event to your calendar or custom functions using developer-specific coded actions.
* **Clips:** Share information without the hurdles of syncing schedules and multiple emails with clips. Record five-minute audio and video clips and send them to channels with the option to blur the background and share your screen for more context.
* **Advanced Search:** Save time spent scrolling through chats by searching for keywords using the search bar or Slack AI. Narrow down your search by adding channel or user name, file type and date ranges.
* **Integrations:** Expand your horizons with a little help from integrations. Connect with over 2,600 applications, including HubSpot, Salesforce Sales Cloud and Service Cloud, Workday, Factorial HR, Asana, Jira Cloud, Confluence Cloud, Notion, Miro, Google Drive, Microsoft Outlook Calendar, Zoom, Box, GitHub Enterprise Server and Mailchimp.

## See It In Action: Set Up A Canvas

Since Slack ended up in my vernacular three years ago, I’ve started “verbing” it and saying things like, “I’ll Slack you” when signing off on work calls. But, testing this product made me realize I’ve only scratched the surface with channels and huddles.

I decided to go where I had never gone before and start work on my own canvas (literally, not just figuratively). In the paid version, you can create a canvas outside of channels and DMs by clicking on the plus icon and selecting canvas. For a more universal experience, I created a canvas inside a DM.

For starters, I clicked on the DM I wanted to create the canvas in. I liked how straightforward it was to find the Add canvas button and get started exploring templates.

![](https://www.selecthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Canvas-1.png)

Next, I selected explore templates because I wanted something a little less basic than an agenda document.

![](https://www.selecthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Canvas-2.png)

I finally settled on the employee onboarding template as I thought it had a variety of features like checklists, tables, links and users. Note: you can preview every template before you apply it, from top to bottom, which I thought was neat. I added in onboarding buddies, links and filled in a meeting schedule. The only bummer is that you need the paid version to access automations like auto-joining certain channels.

![](https://www.selecthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Canvas-4.png)

You can also select text and add comments with mentions and links, I liked the possible use cases. For example, it would work great for editing proofs and documents and creating templates without having to go to another tool like Google Docs.

Bonus: I could also export the canvas to a PDF using the print option.

![](https://www.selecthub.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Canvas-5.png)

Overall, I thought it was simple to set up, and I loved the export option. I didn’t have to watch a tutorial or google next steps. In my opinion it offers a great in-house proofing or template tool.

"reviewBody": "Slack is a collaboration and communication all-rounder with something for everyone regardless of size or industry. It helps users boost productivity and avoid context switching with centralization, organization, automation and AI.Full disclosure, I used Slack before I embarked on this test. However, even when I first began sending slacks, I thought it was incredibly simple to navigate, create channels and send messages on both the browser and via the mobile app.The organization of the platform is a massive plus, in my opinion. To sum it up, I’d say Slack is a winner if you’re looking for a platform that will organize and centralize your communication and have the budget for their paid plans."
