Unfortunately, online learning platforms aren’t all sunshine and rainbows. There are a few disadvantages that every business needs to take into consideration before adopting their own system:

No Hands-On Experience

There are lots of things you can do online; in fact, in today’s world, you can do just about everything online. But there’s no replacement for hands-on experience. In some cases this isn’t too much of an issue; writing and coding, for example, are done on a computer no matter what. But in the case of, for example, engineering or field service, you need to physically work with your hands and interact with the equipment you’re working with.

No matter how advanced your online learning platform is, it can’t simulate physically interacting with equipment. They’re more than adept at providing your employees with the conceptual breakdowns of everything, but practice is just as (and probably more) important.

Less Human Interaction

The internet may connect us, but there’s still no substitute for connections made away from the screen. To the credit of online learning platforms, they provide plenty of collaboration capabilities. Most have forums for learners to ask questions and messaging services to interact with others during lessons. But it’s not the same as learning alongside the rest of your fellow students.

This isn’t as big of an issue when learning concepts such as HTML syntax or Excel formulas, but it presents a greater hurdle when learning soft skills. You can’t effectively learn skills such as emotional intelligence through a forum. What you need is real practice with your fellow human beings. After all, you don’t manage usernames, emails and computer screen images; you manage people.

Less Accountability

In the case of self-paced online courses, your most proactive employees shine. They immediately engage with the content and, more often than not, finish their coursework quickly. Unfortunately, not every employee is that enthusiastic.

Sometimes there are employees who put off their work for as long as possible. In an in-person class, this becomes apparent pretty quickly. An instructor would realize who’s doing their work and who isn’t; all they have to do is take a look at who isn’t turning in their assignments and who participates the least in discussions. But when classes are held online, nobody’s in a position to oversee these things on a regular basis. This gives more wiggle room for employees to slack off, not participate in the learning and get away with it for longer than they could in the classroom.

Types of eLearning Courses Available in Online Learning Platforms

Now that we’ve gone over the benefits and challenges, let’s look at what types of courses are provided by online learning platforms. There are two main types of eLearning courses available:

Synchronous

Synchronous learning means that everyone learns at the same time, via instructor-led training in a virtual classroom. These types of courses allow real-time collaboration between students, as well as two-way communication between the instructor and students.

Asynchronous

The other type of eLearning courses available are the opposite of synchronous, called asynchronous. These are your self-paced courses, where you do the readings, watch videos, take quizzes, etc. whenever you want. These allow much more flexibility of access, but they also don’t provide as much collaboration or communication with other students or with the instructors (if there are any).

Blended

Yes, we know, we said there are only two main types of eLearning courses. But we can’t call this an “in-depth analysis” if we don’t mention the less common (but growing) blended method of eLearning. The blended method is experiencing a lot of growth in traditional universities, as higher education looks to integrate the online and offline worlds.

This method combines in-person, instructor-led training with online learning. Typically, there are readings, videos and quizzes or simulations that students do online before meeting up in person. The in-person sessions are used mostly for discussions and practicing skills that require human interaction or hands-on work. In the corporate environment, this has become popular for training soft skills. You can’t effectively practice things like listening to others with a computer screen, but you can learn the basics of it on a computer. In this case, the learners usually read or watch a video explaining the basics online and then put them to practice when they get to the classroom.
